Solidarity with Union of Journalists in Lebanon
In light of the ongoing Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the Industrial Workers of the World Printing and Publishing Workers Union and Freelance Journalists Union expresses its solidarity with the Union of Journalists in Lebanon, a member of the International Federation of Journalists.
The Israeli invasion has already claimed the lives of at least 1,268 people in Lebanon, according to the Ministry of Public Health as of this writing. Among the dead are at least four journalists, per IFJ. In addition to the killings, the Israeli invasion has also displaced more than one million people, including at least 65 journalists registered with UJL.
To support journalists in Lebanon, UJL is offering both professional services, such as workplace access, and social services, such as housing. While the humanitarian crisis is immense and growing with each day the Israeli invasion persists, UJL is seeking an initial contribution of $10,000 to address the most pressing needs.
The IWW PPWU-FJU is therefore fundraising to provide UJL with this initial contribution. We encourage all journalists, union members and others to support UJL by contributing to this fundraiser and sharing it widely.

Save Garderie Bernadette!
To the University of Ottawa community:
We are the child care workers of Garderie Bernadette Child Care Centre and members of the Bernadette Workers Union.
We want your help to save Garderie Bernadette from closing on May 31, 2026.
The University of Ottawa has taken an arbitrary, short-sighted decision to close the Garderie Bernadette on May 31, 2026, ending 37 years of affordable, on-campus, bilingual daycare for students, staff and faculty. Recently, we received notice management is closing the centre on April 2.
Closing Bernadette will result in the immediate, irreplaceable loss of 49 childcare spots for parents of infants, toddlers and pre-school children of university parents.
Our members will lose their jobs, their livelihoods and their deep connection with the University of Ottawa community.
Back in 2022, the University of Ottawa re-committed itself to supporting our non-profit daycare on campus.
We believe the University of Ottawa can be persuaded again to find a space for Garderie Bernadette with persistent, significant pressure from the University of Ottawa community and allies throughout Ottawa.
Given the state of crisis of access to affordable childcare in Ottawa, we believe there is a strong argument for us as workers and you as parents and community members to advocate for the continuation of our childcare centre.
We, as the workers and backbone of Garderie Bernadette, are committed to continue serving the University of Ottawa community, either as a non-profit daycare or a worker cooperative daycare. We see the need and the important role we play every day in making the University of Ottawa a great place to study and work for today’s parents in higher education.
We urge you to help us save Garderie Bernadette and to build a strong partnership with us as unionized childcare workers.
The first step is to let the university leadership know they have made a mistake. Send them an email to demand the university find a space for the daycare so we can continue to do our jobs, caring for children and supporting university families.

Nous sommes les éducatrices de la Garderie Bernadette et membres du Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs de Bernadette.
Nous sollicitons votre aide pour empêcher la fermeture de la Garderie Bernadette le 31 mai 2026.
L’Université d’Ottawa a pris une décision arbitraire et irréfléchie de fermer la Garderie Bernadette le 31 mai 2026, mettant ainsi fin à 37 ans de services de garde bilingues, abordables et situés sur le campus, pour les étudiantes, le personnel et les professeur(e)s. Nous avons récemment reçu un avis de fermeture du centre, daté du 2 avril.
La fermeture de Bernadette entraînera la perte immédiate et irréparable de 49 places en garderie pour les parents d’enfants de moins de 3 ans et d’âge préscolaire dont les parents sont membres de la communauté universitaire.
Nos membres perdront leur emploi, leurs moyens de subsistance et leur lien profond avec la communauté de l’Université d’Ottawa.
En 2022, l’Université d’Ottawa a renouvelé son engagement à soutenir notre garderie sans but lucratif sur le campus.
Nous croyons que l’Université d’Ottawa peut être convaincue de nouveau de trouver un espace pour la Garderie Bernadette grâce à une pression soutenue et significative de la part de la communauté universitaire et de ses alliés à Ottawa.
Compte tenu de la crise d’accès aux services de garde abordable à Ottawa, nous croyons qu’il existe de solides arguments pour que nous, en tant que travailleurs et vous, en tant que parents et membres de la communauté, plaidions pour le maintien de notre garderie.
En tant que travailleurs et travailleuses de la Garderie Bernadette, nous sommes déterminés à continuer de servir la communauté de l’Université d’Ottawa, que ce soit sous la forme d’une garderie sans but lucratif ou d’une garderie coopérative de travailleurs et travailleuses. Nous constatons chaque jour l’importance de notre rôle pour faire de l’Université d’Ottawa un lieu d’études et de travail idéal pour les parents d’aujourd’hui dans l’enseignement supérieur.
Nous vous encourageons vivement à nous aider à sauver la Garderie Bernadette et à bâtir un partenariat puissant avec nous, en tant que travailleurs et travailleuses syndiqués(es) en services de garde.
La première étape consiste à faire savoir à la direction de l’université qu’ils ont pris une mauvaise décision. Contactez-les par courriel pour exiger que l’université trouve un espace pour la garderie afin que nous puissions continuer à faire notre travail, à prendre soin des enfants et à soutenir les familles de l’université.
